BLOC Design-Build recently opened a new in-house instrumentation panel assembly shop, allowing for faster turn-around on projects and the ability to serve more clients.
A subsidiary of KSA Engineers, Inc., BLOC Design-Build, LLC is a design-build company specializing in heavy construction, as well as instrumentation and controls.
Operations Manager Jim Holland, P.E. said the new shop, located on Tyler Street in Longview, Texas allows BLOC electricians to ensure all instrumentation panels meet company standards and are certified by Underwriters Laboratories.
Prior to opening the panel shop, BLOC would sub-contract panel construction to other electrical firms or order them straight from a manufacturer, Holland said.
"With the addition of the shop, we'll be building all the panels ourselves, pre-wiring and pre-programming them so our guys will be prepared in the field. They can connect the wires and be done," he said. "For our clients, it will also bring more uniformity to our panels. Now, we can streamline the process, which makes it look nicer and makes it easier for us to troubleshoot."
With panels pre-assembled and programmed, Holland explained the time spent on a job site is significantly reduced.
"It cuts our time in the field down close to half. That saves money for our clients," he said. "It also lets us carry more work load because now we don't have guys at the site for six to eight weeks. They are only there for two to three weeks."
KSA Engineers President Joncie Young said the addition of BLOC's panel shop provides a controlled environment for panel assembly and testing.
"From here forward, BLOC panels will be delivered quicker, look better and be fully tested before they arrive on the job site," Young said. "The shop will also give owners and design engineers the ability to test and verify that the panels meet all project design requirements prior to shipment."
